In the golf world we have a lot of activities happening such that one would hardly understand the game. We have the Caddie or Caddy, these are the people who handle the golfers advising them on how to play and also carry their golf kits. The Caddies are under the Kenya National Caddies Association. All it takes to be a caddie is training and knowing about the rules of the game. Caddies are not employed by the golf courses but by the clients who could be anyone from the movers and shakers of an economy or even people from other nationalities who wishes to participate in the games event, thus they are paid on a daily basis.
A caddie should arrive one hour before the tee off time, ensure the player has no more than 14 clubs which are recorded, read and grant collection, if the player is winning a caddie should keep him calm to the end of the game for them to secure the victory. After the rounds the caddie is paid as per the prescription, and sometimes given tips for a job well done.
Good Caddies are also golfers with good handicaps; they can play golf in and out of the country whenever they are sponsored. This results to the best caddie being identified by the various golf courses they’re based in and they end up joining the clubs as honorary members upon which Kenya Golf Union calls them up for the national duty and hence after sometime they turn professionals.
Here are some of the caddies working in the Muthaiga Golf Club

    CHARLES MAINA
He has been a caddie for 16 years a job he always wanted to do while a young boy as his family lived in Muthaiga and that had great influence in him. He plays golf 2 to 3 times in a week.

    PETER MBATIA
A national coordinator in the Kenya National Caddies Association has been a caddie for 20 years. He says there’s no age limit to being caddie hence you don’t get to retire unless you’re unable to see or walk or when you get a better job. Peter says he didn’t want to be a caddie as a child but his extended family members were working in the golf clubs at Nyeri County and after his O’level studies he got interested in the game and started as a player before eventually becoming a caddie.

    JOHN KILONZO
A former captain at Muthaiga golf club. He talks about the roles of a captain saying one has to get sponsors for caddie players, organize events for players, give winners prizes and manage caddie handicap. He has been working in the golf course for 12 years. He adds that he loves golf and he’s working hard practicing to be a professional player.

    JOSHUA GITHINJI
Has been a caddie for 6 years now, and he always wanted to be one since young age. He also wants to be a professional player in future.
