GIDEON MOI: WORTHY ADVERSARY OR NOT

    Close to 19 years ago in a vote widely hailed as a step forward for democracy in Africa, NARC resoundingly defeated the party that has ruled over them for nearly four decades and Kenyans selected the opposition leader Mwai Kibaki as their new president. The result left no doubt about the voters’ opinion of the 24-year rule of the retiring president, Daniel arap Moi. Throughout the country, Kenyans rejected Mr. Moi’s choice as his successor, Uhuru Kenyatta, a newcomer to politics who is the son of the country’s founding president, Jomo Kenyatta.

    Election officials declared Mr. Kibaki the winner as ballots were still being tabulated. Without releasing complete results, they said the margin was so great that none of his four rivals stood a chance. Independent election watchers gave Mr. Kibaki 63 percent of the vote, compared with 20 percent for Mr. Kenyatta, the second-place finisher. Since then the name of Moi had greatly diminished till recently when his son Gideon has revived talks of a “Moi” being President.

    There is no doubt about the monstrous political clout that the representative president employs in the locale. Since 2017, however, a progression of political occasions have had analysts argue on the likelihood of a duel between the DP and another political boss, Gideon Moi.
